It
was an unusual experience for my team and myself. It was our first cup final and it had been a
long road to get here. We were missing
top scorer Dan Payne, injured last month with a dislocated knee and out for the
rest of the season, and Jason McCrossan a defender,
also injured. The game itself was
exciting and end to end. It took Fry’s
about 20 minutes to wake up once the game had started, and by then we were 1-0
down from a corner on the right, swung in and bundled over the line. A good through ball by Ricky Anstey led to
Danny Hunt getting the equaliser, racing through and drilling the ball past the
keeper. Joe Cook, recovering from a
suspected broken wrist and playing at left wing had a shot that just dropped
onto the roof of the net. Full backs
Phil Knight and Mike Tarling were holding Whitchurch
at bay and if they got past then Curtis Jack the sweeper was there to stop
them. In the middle of midfield Ian
Field and Mark Webb worked tirelessly whilst outnumbered in closing down and
winning the ball, Mark losing a contact lens and playing half of the game with
blurred vision. Whitchurch managed to
get a 2nd but good running again by Ricky Anstey saw him fouled in
the box and up stepped Tom Hamblin the captain to stroke the ball home and make
it 2-2. Liam Kavanagh,
Jay Slade and Ben Sinclair came off of the bench and played their part but we
were under more pressure in the 2nd half and goalkeeper Nick Frost
had a lot of work to do at times. Good
play by Ian Field saw Ricky Lewis put through only to crash the ball against
the bar with the keeper beaten.
Whitchurch then went down the other end and with three minutes to go,
got the winner. With the final whistle
Fry’s were totally demoralised but they do have the incentive of the Somerset
County Cup final still to come and a good chance of runners up in the league.
